Pets and the Home Office

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else, Minimizing Distractions on 01.06.17

My home office is professional in so many ways, but it still has the feeling of home.    It is not uncommon for my dog Lucy to be napping in my virtual office in the warm sunshine coming through the window.   But great care is taken to prevent issues during conference time or time when do not disturb has been initiated. For example, I have a scheduled meeting at 10:00am and I will make sure my office door is closed and I will not be disturbed. Based on my call, no one will know I am working from my virtual home office. Pets are allowed in my office when it is convenient for me; but otherwise, they have a proper place outside of the office.

Before you establish your home office, you may want to evaluate options for your pets and determine how a virtual office may affect them.

Insurance for working from your home office

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else on 22.05.17

Insurance is such an important factor in working from a virtual home office. We have to have insurance for everything from health, cars, home and even working from home. I don’t know about you but I have invested a large portion of my income in software, computers and generally all equipment in my virtual home office.

Mention your working environment to your insurance agent to verify you are fully covered in the event something happens to your home. Prepare for catastrophic events by taking out an added insurance binder to protect your working investment. Always prepare for the unknown.

Have you reviewed your home insurance lately?

Staying Motivated Working from Home

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else on 21.03.17

I find this topic amusing. You hear about people that work from home in their pajamas and house shoes with the sleepys still in their eyes. For me, motivation is easy. I get up every morning and get ready for work as you would in any brick and mortar job. I cannot see myself being quite as motivated to work if I crawl out of bed in the morning and start working. My day starts as any job would.  I get up at a set time, take a shower and get dressed in appropriate clothing for working from home and start my work day.

Motivation is different for everyone. My motivation is treating my work from home position just like a job that I would leave my home to go to the office.  The only difference is my commute time. The only traffic jam I encounter is the dog lying across the hallway to my virtual office.

Kids and Home Offices

Posted in Uncategorized on 23.08.16

When I began working from home, my young daughter was only two years old.  It was difficult to manage her while focusing on business tasks.  Though strong determination and strategic planning, I was able to keep her engaged while I was working.   However, that plan had to be flexible to meet her quickly changing moods.

Chapter 14 of Melissa’s Book-Your Virtual Home Office Can Bea  Reality! focuses on managing children and a virtual home office.   The Life Lessons Article also relays my personal experience with managing a toddler and a home based business simultaneously.

The work from home journey is full of trial and error. Here is one of my favorite famous quotes:  “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty…by Theodore Roosevelt
