Working from your virtual home office is essentially your business and you should market your business similar to that of a traditional store front. First, get business cards with a catchy slogan. Put your business cards in local businesses for optimum exposure.

Next-Join your local chamber of commerce and become an active member of your community. Whatever your business or industry is, let community organizations know. Many people choose to work with local companies and contractors that they can meet in person.

Home Workers – Independent Contractors Versus Employees

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Taxes Tips on 09.01.17

If you are going to need outside help for your home office venture, you need to closely consider whether your worker will be an independent contractor or an employee.  The IRS looks at behavioral control, financial control, and the relationship of the parties to determine a worker’s status.

Not correctly discerning the difference between an employee and independent contractor generally has large tax consequences.  To protect yourself, you may wish to consult with an attorney and review Chapter 4 – Independent Contractors of Melissa’s Book- Your Virtual Home Office Can Be a Reality!

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else on 19.12.16

When working from home, do you need business cards? I would say yes. I can’t say how many times someone will ask me. “You work from home, what do you do?” Times like this, I like to give out business cards.

It gives all the pertinent information about my job, website information – as well as advertises the company I work for. This is a great business tool for creating business within your community.

How can you get started working from home?

Posted in Uncategorized on 22.03.16

I started working from home by spending hours, days and months on research. It was not a quick process. Looking for work became my full time job.  Just like most people, I paid money for a guide that had the top 100 companies that hire work from home workers. Like most guides, it was not worth the paper it was printed on. The best way to get started is:

First-define your skill set. If you have experience working on the telephones, then start in customer service. Gain experience with a company to get your feet wet in this industry. Once you have acquired the necessary skills to excel in the entry level position, start looking for the next position to add to what you are currently doing.

Next- Determine your goals. What is your plan for 1 year and then 5 years? Do you want to own a business or telecommute only? There are so many good, work from home opportunities for those that want to work hard.

Finally– Do your homework! Check out every company before going to work for them. Contact the BBB or state agency where the company is located and definitely check out some of the top WAHM chat boards. Being a newbie in any industry is tough, but being a newbie in the work from home industry can cost you money.

What type of work can you do as a WAH

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else, Work at home opportunities on 18.02.16

When I first started working from home, there were only had a handful of jobs available in the work from home market. Today, many businesses are using remote teams to save on overhead costs. Here are a few job opportunities that I personally have read about:

  • Clerical
  • Telemarketing
  • Survey
  • Medical Billing
  • Medical Transcription
  • Coding
  • Dispatch work
  • Reservations
  • Customer service

And the list continues.

Just remember to check out all opportunities before you spend too much time and effort on them.  Never give money to anyone to work for them. There are great opportunities out there, but just as many scammers using your inexperience to boost their pocket book.

Do you know how to check out a business? Take a look at Melissa’s book “Your Virtual Home Office Can Be a Reality!” Chapter 8 page 41-Better Business Bureau, Ripoff reports, Consumer Affairs groups and more.
