Remote Computer Access

Posted in Uncategorized on 10.10.17

Some telecommuters that work from a virtual home office are able to gain access to the main computer at the office with a virtual log in and secure server. For larger companies, remote access is a plus since they can see what the employee is doing on a regular basis.

Companies can monitor log-ins and actual work completed during the day. Working virtually with remote access still requires the home worker to have virus protection and all of the other safe working components. When choosing to work remote or with remote access, weigh all the options available with your employer.

Remember when working from home, you are solely responsible for computer upkeep and updates.

Are you ready to start your work from home journey?

Resume for Working from Home

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else, Work at home opportunities on 25.08.17

Building your work from home resume is a little different than the traditional resume. Working from your virtual home office allows you to add more education and training to your resume.

For example if you become certified in web design or database development, list this on your resume. Work from home is not only a job but your core business. Listing your education and certifications can help land an account or position that normally would not be a consideration for those without the traditional corporate ladder experience.

Backing up Work Files

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else, Minimizing Distractions on 23.06.17

While working from your home office, it is very very important to back-up your computer files. I find this topic one that has hit home recently. My husband’s personal computer crashed this week and he lost all data stored. His data was very important since it housed all of our financial information. Since working from your virtual office is your main source of income, it is high priority to schedule time to back-up your computer files.

Some telecommuters complete this task weekly and others once per month. It does not really matter when you back-up files for your virtual business, but think about the position you would be in today if you lost your entire computer and all data and how easily you can avoid that situation.

Are you set up for a successful journey working from home?

Virus Protection

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else on 13.04.17

Working from home requires more virus protection since working from home in your virtual office is your livelihood. Since you are the sole provider of your work from home business, you will need to ensure you are fully covered by keeping your equipment, software and virus protection up to date.  There are many different kinds of virus protection available for the virtual home office. I personally use Avast. Avast is free to the home user and offers all of the same bells as whistles as McAfee and Norton. Avast also has a paid version (that I use) that gives you added internet security for spam and other hackers.

Virus protection is a work from home essential since it keeps your working and banking information secure. If you lose your computer due to a virus, you could be down without a computer for days causing you loss of revenue. Prepare for the unknown. Murphy’s law states “Anything can go wrong, will go wrong”. Take time to be prepared and protect your virtual home office career as well as family’s livelihood.

Negative Press in the Work at home industry

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Minimizing Distractions on 02.03.17

I subscribe to several work-at-home news feeds and I am always interested in reading the perspectives from my work at home colleagues.  However, in the last week or so, I have noticed several articles where the author viewed their home office in a negative light.  It appeared that the authors were not well prepared in developing their home office environment; and thus, were bombarded with a continuous flow of family interruptions.

If you need help in planning your home office or working with your family to minimize distractions, you might want to review chapter 14 of Melissa’s book-Your Virtual Home Office Can Be a Reality!
