It seems like everyone is on the social media sites. You have Facebook, twitter, email and the list goes on and on. It can really be hard to focus on your work once you have these sites open. Sometimes because we work from home, we have a tendency to think it is not as important to keep your focus on work and turn off the distractions.

I make a point to check the sites that are important to me before starting work for the day. I am easily distracted and don’t need to hear about drama while I am working. When working from your virtual home office, you have to pick and choose when it is appropriate to take a phone call or check your social sites. Focus takes work and dedication. Working from your virtual office is essentially your business and you should market your business similar to that of a traditional store front. First, get business cards with a catchy slogan. Put your business cards in local businesses for optimum exposure.

Join your local chamber of commerce and become an active member of your community. Whatever your business or industry is, let community organizations know. Many people choose to work with local companies and contractors that they can meet in person.

Insurance is such an important factor in working from a virtual home office. We have to have insurance for everything from our health, cars, home and even working from home. I don’t know about you but I have invested a large portion of my income in software, computers and generally all equipment in my virtual home office.

Mention your working environment to your insurance agent to verify you are fully covered in the event something happens to your home. Prepare for catastrophic events by taking out an added insurance binder to protect your working investment. Always prepare for the unknown.
