Remote Computer Access

Posted in Uncategorized on 10.10.17

Some telecommuters that work from a virtual home office are able to gain access to the main computer at the office with a virtual log in and secure server. For larger companies, remote access is a plus since they can see what the employee is doing on a regular basis.

Companies can monitor log-ins and actual work completed during the day. Working virtually with remote access still requires the home worker to have virus protection and all of the other safe working components. When choosing to work remote or with remote access, weigh all the options available with your employer.

Remember when working from home, you are solely responsible for computer upkeep and updates.

Pets and the Home Office

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Everything Else, Minimizing Distractions on 01.06.17

My home office is professional in so many ways, but it still has the feeling of home.    It is not uncommon for my dog Lucy to be napping in my virtual office in the warm sunshine coming through the window.   But great care is taken to prevent issues during conference time or time when do not disturb has been initiated. For example, I have a scheduled meeting at 10:00am and I will make sure my office door is closed and I will not be disturbed. Based on my call, no one will know I am working from my virtual home office. Pets are allowed in my office when it is convenient for me; but otherwise, they have a proper place outside of the office.

Before you establish your home office, you may want to evaluate options for your pets and determine how a virtual office may affect them.

Home Workers – Independent Contractors Versus Employees

Posted in Establish your virtual home office, Taxes Tips on 09.01.17

If you are going to need outside help for your home office venture, you need to closely consider whether your worker will be an independent contractor or an employee.  The IRS looks at behavioral control, financial control, and the relationship of the parties to determine a worker’s status.

Not correctly discerning the difference between an employee and independent contractor generally has large tax consequences.  To protect yourself, you may wish to consult with an attorney and review Chapter 4 – Independent Contractors of Melissa’s Book- Your Virtual Home Office Can Be a Reality!
